India’s prime minister announced on Sunday that his government will seek the creation of a council to push for changes in the country’s higher-education system. During a speech to mark the country’s indpendence day, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said improving India’s colleges and universities is key to economic growth and social development. He added that higher education is an area that has not received the attention it deserves since the country’s independence in 1947. “Today, almost every child in our country has access to primary education,” he said. “Now, we need to pay more attention to secondary and higher education.”
