Pakistan’s federal government on Thursday agreed to pay for a 65-percent increase in university professors’ salaries two days after faculty at the country’s 72 public universities said they would go on an indefinite strike, reports the Dawn newspaper. The government also said that federal support for university students on scholarships at home and abroad and higher-education building projects would continue despite budget cuts. However, Mahr Saeed Akhtar, president of an association of faculty members, said the government’s decision is a case of “too little, too late.” He added that the higher-education system was in a shambles because of frequent monetary reductions.
