Ontario Students With Disabilities Face Significant Financial Obstacles

February 3, 2011, 4:01 pm

More than a third of the students with disabilities who attend postsecondary institutions in Ontario say that financial constraints hurt their ability to access education, says a report issued Thursday by the Higher Education Quality Council of Ontario. The group surveyed students registered as disabled at 14 universities and five colleges in the province, which has more higher-education institutions than any other province in Canada. Despite multiple sources of income, including government student loans, work income, and savings, the report says, students often don’t have enough to pay for education-related services and equipment. Two-thirds said they had had significant financial barriers in trying to complete their education, including paying for assistive aids and the assessments required to document their disability status, which sometimes cost as much as $3,000. About half of the respondents said they had learning disabilities, and a quarter said they had mental disabilities.
