The Ontario government, in what it claims is a first for Canada, will offer 75 foreign Ph.D. students full scholarships to study at the province’s universities, reports The Globe and Mail. Dalton McGuinty, Ontario’s premier, made the announcement Thursday in a speech in Hong Kong, on the last leg of a trip to China. Students from China make up the largest segment of international students on Ontario campuses. The scholarship students will get $40,000 in Canadian dollars annually. The federal government, through its Vanier Scholarship program, offers graduate scholarships for foreign students, but until now, the provinces have not done so. However, the Ontario government said this year that it wanted to increase foreign-student enrollment in the province by 50 percent.
