Nonprofit groups around the world, including colleges and universities, have mixed views about how fund raising will fare this year and next, according to a new report. Blackbaud, a software company, surveyed 2,383 organizations, 8 percent of which work in higher education, in 10 countries about their income, staff needs, demand for programs, and other aspects of their work. In five countries—Australia, Canada, France, India, and New Zealand—the majority of respondents expected fund-raising revenue to increase in 2010 and 2011. In Britain, Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands, the mood was less sanguine. In Italy, for example, 37 percent said fund raising would grow this year and 47 percent next year. The United States appeared to be balancing its expectations, with 45 percent expecting philanthropy to rise in 2010 and 60 percent the following year. The Chronicle of Philanthropy reports that all respondents said finding new donors was a key responsibility, but that they were falling short in their efforts.
