New Guidelines for European Researchers Presented

July 23, 2010, 1:35 pm

New conduct guidelines for European researchers were presented on Thursday at the World Conference on Research Integrity in Singapore by the European Science Foundation, an independent agency that promotes collaboration in scientific research, research financing, and science policy. The new European Code of Conduct for Research Integrity outlines “principles of integrity” that should underlie all scientific and scholarly research. These include honesty in communication; reliability in performing research; objectivity, impartiality, and independence; openness and accessibility; a duty of care; fairness in providing references and giving credit; and responsibility for the scientists and researchers of the future. The code “is not intended to replace existing national or academic guidelines, but represents agreement across 30 countries on a set of principles and priorities for self-regulation of the research community,” according to a press release from the foundation. Allegations of research dishonesty or malpractice, such as recent cases at the University of East Anglia in Britain and Sweden’s Karolinska Institute “call to question the efforts of thousands of scientists and decades of research effort,” the release says. The complete code of conduct was published earlier this month in a European Science Foundation executive report on fostering research integrity in Europe.
