Malaysian Government Ends Study-Abroad Scholarships

June 18, 2010, 11:23 am

Malaysia has decided to scrap government scholarships that send students to study at foreign universities, saying such efforts contribute to the country’s so-called brain drain, reports The Strait Times. The government will no longer provide 1,500 undergraduate scholarships each year. The program paid for tuition and living costs, with most of the recipients studying in Australia, Briatin, or the United States. A government official acknowledged that the decision was unpopular but said it would benefit the nation’s higher-education system and future prosperity.
