Israel’s first college specifically established to help educate the country’s 1.54 million Arab citizens has opened in Nazareth after a decade-long struggle for recognition from the Israeli Council for Higher Education. While other higher-education institutions in Israel serve Arab students, the Nazareth Academic Institute, or NAI, offers the country’s only higher-education instruction in Arabic and was founded by the Arab community. It is open to students of all faiths. “Operated by an academic team of Jewish and Arab, Muslim and Christian Israelis, NAI’s mission is to be a multicultural academic center for peace, research, and development; to offer professional nurturing for students; and to create diverse, responsible leadership in Israel,” the college said in a statement. At its opening Monday, the college had 38 students enrolled in two full-degree programs: 20 in chemistry and 18 in communications. Two additional programs in computer science and occupational therapy are under review by the Council for Higher Education with another 12 programs to be submitted for council approval in the next five years.
