India’s Vedanta University Project Is ‘as Good as Over’

September 8, 2010, 9:00 am

The ambitious $3.5-billion plan to build a world-class university in the Indian state of Orissa is all but scrapped, reports the Indian Express. The Indian government has denied environmental permits for a refinery project that was connected to the university. The billionaire Anil Agarwal had sought to use land in Orissa for both the university and his mining company. With the government’s decision, Vedanta University in Orissa “is as good as over,” an unnamed company official told the newspaper. The project has been in trouble from the beginning, with questions being raised about its land use. The Indian government put a hold on the university project in May to further investigate potential environmental hazards. Vedanta officials said the university project may move to the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh or Karnataka.
