Indiana University at Bloomington is considering asking its incoming freshmen to bring with them something unusual: a passport. According to the Indiana Daily Student, administrators latched on to the idea after meeting with Allan E. Goodman, president of the Institute of International Education, who said every student should arrive with a passport and graduate knowing a foreign language. In 2007, Temple University’s president, Ann Weaver Hart, offered to pay the passport-application fee for any student who was applying for the first time. And Goucher College, which requires all students to study abroad, offers a voucher of $1,200 to help defray the expenses.
