India Plans to Distribute a Million Tablet Computers to Its Universities

August 12, 2010, 3:24 pm

The Indian government says it will distribute to universities a million low-cost tablet computers next year, reports Tech2, a technology-news Web site. The tablets were developed by students and scientists at four of the Indian Institutes of Technology and the Indian Institute of Science. The Indian government plans to spend $17.5-million to develop the computers, helping to drive their cost down from around $50 to $35 and thus making them one of the cheapest personal computing devices on the market, according to several news articles.

One Response to India Plans to Distribute a Million Tablet Computers to Its Universities

Wait a moment. The Indian government “plans to spend” money to develop the computers, meaning the computers haven’t even been developed yet, AND they’re going to design functional tablet computers with a $35 price point, AND have 1 million of them actually manufactured and ready for distribution in just one year!?? If India’s government and private sector are actually capable of meeting all of these goals, the rest of the world should be really scared, competitively speaking.
