A demonstration by students at Makerere University, Uganda’s largest, turned violent on Friday when police officers confronted students who were striking to protest planned tuition increases, according to The Razor Newspaper. The strike began over reports that tuition would be doubled, and the violence started when the police tried to stop a public meeting by the students to voice their concerns. Students reportedly smashed vendors’ food canteens and broke windows, as the police fired live ammunition into the air and used tear gas to quell the disturbance. Venansius Baryamureeba, the university’s vice chancellor, denied the rumored fee increase. The New York Times reported that the protest turned into a demonstration against the government of President Yoweri Museveni.
