Four Australian universities have closed some of their campuses because of heavy flooding in the northeastern state of Queensland. Campuses of Griffith University, CQ University, the University of Queensland, and the Queensland University of Technology were closed, but are scheduled to reopen this week. Power was shut off or lost in many campus buildings, disrupting Internet communications. Examinations were canceled, and staff members were told to stay home. University officials said the flood damage was generally restricted to recreational fields and outlying parking garages, with core academic buildings less affected. At the South Bank campus of Griffith University, the staff moved equipment, musical instruments, and library collections to higher ground, and used sandbags to try to prevent damage to buildings such as the Queensland Conservatorium, the university’s music school.
