To build links with Indian higher education, eight Canadian universities announced Tuesday almost $3.5-million in new graduate scholarships for Indian students, mostly in the sciences. The announcement came as more than a dozen Canadian university presidents are visiting India for a seven-day trip. “We are trying to strengthen the position of Canada in the minds of Indian government, top Indian businesses, and top universities in India,” said Paul Davidson, president of the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada. The United States, Britain, and Australia focus on international-student recruitment mostly without offering monetary support, so the fact that Canadian universities have increased scholarship money is “a sign of tangible commitment,” said Mr. Davidson. “This is a lot more than drinking tea,” he said. “This is about getting down to business. This is about more student exchanges.”
