British researchers are performing at a high level and moving up, while U.S. researchers are fading in global prominence, according to an analysis of data intended to look at the performance of research in Britain compared with that of four key competing countries—France, Germany, Japan, and the United States. The study, by Thomson Reuters, found high performance by British researchers given relatively low investment in research by private industry: “U.K. performance is on a rising trajectory, whereas the U.S.A. research base has at best plateaued in performance and—on some estimates—is now in decline.”
