New visa rules will hinder foreign academics from coming to Australia and will hurt its efforts to attract the best research talent, eight major universities in the country said, The Australian newspaper reported. The government has decided to end preferential visa treatment for outside scholars as part of the new rules. Higher-education administrators say the change will only increase an already-problematic shortage of professors.
