In a cost-cutting move, the University of Sydney this week told 100 academics that they were being fired for failing to publish enough, reports Nature. In a letter, the faculty members were told that they had not published at least four “research outputs” in the last three years. Another 200 administrative positions are also going to be lost, in an effort to make up for an unexpected tuition shortfall. The National Tertiary Education Union said in a statement that the university was planning “a massive building expansion at the cost of students’ education.”
