Getting Donors to Give More
What makes a small donor want to give more? It’s a question many fund raisers do their best to answer and the focus of a new three-part report by Eduventures, a higher-education research firm.
Among other statistics, the report shows that more than one-quarter of donors made a gift of $25,000 or more within five years of making their first gift to a college. Almost half of all donors made their first gift to an institution more than 20 years before making a commitment at the major-gift level.
According to the report, fund raisers had an average of 3.6 face-to-face visits with donors during the two years leading up to their first major gift, as well as contacting them an average of 14.5 other times by e-mail, phone calls, or personalized letters.
The report analyzes data on nearly 1,300 donors who made their first major gift ($25,000 or more) to an institution in the 2007 fiscal year. The data was collected in conjunction with the Reeher Group, a higher-education consulting firm.
