Alumni Lawsuit Against American U. Is Dismissed

A $1.5-million lawsuit against American University — filed by two alumni over a false announcement that appeared in the alumni magazine, stating that the two men had become “life partners” — was dismissed this month because it was filed in the wrong court.

In what appears to have been a practical joke, somebody submitted an announcement that ran in American Magazine and declared that the men were leaders of a group called the Gay Rights Brigade, an organization that doesn’t actually exist.

The lawsuit was filed in New York City, but according to court documents, such decisions must be made in the state in which the publication is based. American University is in the District of Columbia.
