Hawaiian Community College Receives Largest Gift
Honolulu Community College received a $3.4-million donation from a former carpentry student, according to the Star Bulletin.
Norman Loui, who died last year, graduated in 1961 and went on to become a co-founder of Hawaiian Rent-All, an equipment rental company. He was a bachelor with no children, but followed the philanthropic footsteps of his mother, Bernice Loui, who is a 100-year-old donor to the University of Hawaii.
As a student, Mr. Loui was struck by how many classmates could not afford to buy the tools they need to complete their coursework, according to the article.
“He said he wants to help those students,” his mother told the newspaper.
Officials said that Mr. Loui’s gift is the largest ever given to a community college in Hawaii.
