Musings About Youth, Madonna, and 'Fabulous Shoes'
As Newsweek and The New York Times wrote more in recent days about Barack Obama’s efforts to rock the youth vote, John McCain has gained some support of his own in appealing to the under-30 crowd.
His daughter Meghan, who recently graduated from Columbia University, and some of her friends have started a “McCainBlogette.” As they travel with the Republican senator’s presidential campaign, they plan to blog about “musings and pop culture on the political trail.”
So, if those policy planks and town-hall Q&A’s are a bit too wonky for you, the Blogettes may have what you’re looking for in a political blog. The young women promise a “behind the scenes” account of a presidential campaign, including details on “notoriously cramped quarters, stale donuts, and the fabulous shoes!”
“We hope that our blog contains a fresh perspective on what is sometimes perceived as a stale and boring process,” they write. “We are friends bound by a passion for politics, pop culture, fashion, and our adventurous spirits.”
So far they’ve blogged about an event for young professionals in Phoenix where attendees danced to Madonna and sipped “McCain margaritas.” Meghan also bragged about her dad’s comedy routine and noted that he showed off a cellphone photo taken at her graduation. (“My Dad has a gold razr phone…,” she notes under a photo of him at the event.)
Next stop: tonight’s Republican debate in Michigan. Let’s hope the candidates have some fab footwear to show off on national TV.

If nothing else, McCain is a really interesting person who is pretty true to himself. That’s rare in politics.

I guess the blogs are today’s equivalent of the license plate game.

I would assume a Columbia Graduate would have better ways of occupying their time than worrying about what color razor phone their father carries. On another note, if Madonna knew that the a bunch of conservatives were dancing to her music, I think she would wonder if they were oblivious to the “American Life,” album that blasts the Republican political viewpoint.

As a Columbia graduate, I can tell you with great certainty that many of my peers do, indeed, spend a lot of their time caring about what cell phone people carry. I also think that she is doing what anyone campaigning in politics would do, which is make very calculated decisions about what to say in order to get the highest number of people interested in you and your platform.
