National Campaign Helps Organize Youth Vote
During what Time magazine dubbed “The Year of the Youth Vote,” a nationwide campaign is working to make sure students get registered in time for the general election. The National Campus Voter Registration Project will provide resources and information for student organizers looking to help voter-registration efforts at their schools.
The campaign’s recently launched Web site, Your Vote, Your Voice, contains a clickable state-by-state map of registration deadlines and advice on where voter-registration cards can be placed and how student organizers can promote their efforts through local media. The site features examples of techniques used by students at other schools, including a 2004 registration drive at Saint Anselm College, in New Hampshire, which gave out door-hangers and temporary tattoos advertising their efforts.
The National Campus Voter Registration Project was started in 1996 by the Washington Higher Education Secretariat, a group in Washington D.C. which represents 50 higher-education associations nationwide. The project will publicize itself through those associations.
