Biden Touts Education Plans in Iowa

Joseph R. Biden Jr., a Democrat and U.S. senator from Delaware, touted his plans for improving education at a forum at the University of Northern Iowa yesterday.

Among the proposals he pitched during his speech, Mr. Biden said he would increase the maximum federal Pell Grant to $6,300 and forgive the student loans of aspiring teachers who promise to stay in the profession for a certain number of years, according to The Des Moines Register.

The former college football player also couldn’t resist joking about the coming showdown between his alma mater, the University of Delaware, and the University of Northern Iowa. The two are scheduled to meet on the gridiron on Saturday.

“You have no idea how happy I am that I am talking to you this Tuesday as opposed to next Tuesday,” the newspaper quoted Mr. Biden as saying. “Next Tuesday, depending on how the game went, either I would have been very sad, or you would have been very angry.

“Now we can be friends.”
