Visiting the U. of Utah Campus? Check the Construction Map First

Students and faculty members returning to many campuses this month are finding roads and walkways closed because of infrastructure projects too big to be completed over the summer. At the University of Utah, where a number of utility-upgrade and construction efforts are currently disrupting traffic, an online map now warns people where and when they’re likely to find congestion, according to The Deseret News.

“The information on the site will be updated weekly or even daily, if needed,” said Darrin Blaisdell, geographical-information systems manager for the university’s facilities-management department. “We hope anyone who travels to campus will bookmark this site and use it before beginning their trip.”

The Web site, which lets users choose between a map and a satellite-photo view, opens pop-up windows explaining various projects as you move a computer cursor over warning signs. The site can also be searched by date, so users planning campus events several months away can check for potential traffic problems. Upgrades to the site, Mr. Blaisdell said, will include a feature that will map out the best route between any two campus points.
