A student-housing development near Villa Maria College has raised concerns among New York State officials. They believe the project defies state anti-discrimination laws, according to the Associated Press.
The state Division of Human Rights served subpoenas against Villa Maria and a developer that is converting the site of an apartment complex occupied largely by members of minority groups into a $100-million student-housing facility. Demolition on the site has already begun, reports say.
Villa Maria and the developer said that the state was mistaken about the nature of the project.
