The U.S. Department of Energy’s decision to take the Solar Decathlon away from its usual location on the National Mall caused a bit of a furor recently—and, no doubt, headaches for the Obama administration, which is trying to promote clean energy and the spirit of innovation.
Now the Energy Department has announced that the 2011 Solar Decathlon will indeed remain on the National Mall—well, sort of. The houses will not be set up on the Great Lawn, in front of the Smithsonian Institution buildings between the Capitol and the Washington Monument, as in the past. Rather, the decathlon houses will be placed down by the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial and the Jefferson Memorial, near the Tidal Basin.
“We look forward to holding another world-class Solar Decathlon in a world-class location—the National Mall’s West Potomac Park,” said Steven Chu, secretary of energy, in a written statement. “Keeping the competition on the National Mall property allows the students to proceed with their existing home designs, specifically tailored for Washington’s latitude, temperature, and humidity conditions. The West Potomac site is in close proximity to a number of attractions and will provide an ideal stage to highlight clean-energy solutions for thousands of public visitors.”
The student contestants, their supporters, and observers of the design field seem pleased with the outcome. “I feel incredible. I feel happy,” Elisabeth Neigert, a graduate student at the Southern California Institute of Architecture, told The Washington Post.
