Gehry house on TV: In a clip on this page, a Minnesota news station reports on Frank Gehry’s Winton guest house, which is moving to property owned by the University of St. Thomas. The clip is valuable for its shots of the interior of the home and for the perspective offered by Victoria Young, a St. Thomas professor who appeared in our recent story on Breuer. But you’ll have to ignore the gimmicky camera tricks and reporter’s Saturday Night Live-style Deep Thoughts. (“It’s been said that art is in the eye of the beholder … but it can also be found where we live.”)
The power lunch will not include carnivores or caffeine addicts: The Des Moines Register reports on the fare offered at the new student center at the Maharishi University of Management: no meat and no caffeine. “The Pepsi machine located in the basement of the student center is for the construction workers who are still putting finishing touches on the building, administrators said this week,” the story says. Much of the food offered on campus is organic and locally grown. Amber Price, of Lincoln, Neb., says that half the reason she transferred to Maharishi from the University of Nebraska was for the food.
Deco demo: One of the last remaining Art Deco buildings in Cleveland, once the site of the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine, will be demolished, according to the Plain Dealer. The new owners, the Cleveland Clinic, say that the 144,000-square-foot building cannot be easily renovated and updated. The site will become a parking lot for now. Some wondered whether the building’s facade could be preserved, but officials at the Cleveland Clinic said that option was not practical.
Parking the world needs more of: Utah State University unveiled a new parking facility — but of a kind that would be welcome to sustainability advocates. It’s a covered bike-parking area for the university’s Aggie Blue Bikes Program, which offers some 90 bikes to loan to students to get around campus and around nearby Logan.
Building in the West: The Associated Press reports that Idaho lawmakers have approved $10-million toward a $40-million research building at Boise State University; the president of Boise State, Bob Kustra, has been asking for $15-million for a few years. Idaho State University will get $5- million to remodel a 320,000-square-foot warehouse to be used to expand the institution’s College of Pharmacy. And at the Montana University System, scores of buildings and upgrades are under discussion, according to the Missoulian.
