Shop Talk: Careful Planning, Creativity May Win Platinum for Science Building

April 18, 2012, 6:32 am

U. of Oregon Lewis Integrative Science BuildingU. of Oregon officials say the $65-million Lewis Integrative Science Building is poised to earn a LEED-platinum designation from the U.S. Green Building Council. Although the ventilation needs of science buildings are notorious energy hogs, the university says the new building’s architects—HDR Inc. and THA Architecture—were careful to segregate areas that need high-capacity ventilation. They also figured out how to pre-heat the building by taking advantage of warmth in the university’s underground utility tunnels—a strategy the university may use with other buildings.
