News Briefs on New Buildings

August 13, 2007, 1:23 pm

New projects in the works, as reported across the country:
Western Carolina University, in Cullowhee, N.C., just got $46-million for a new health-and-gerontological-sciences building. The money was part of a $20-billion bill signed by Gov. Mike Easley. The building, 145,000 square feet in size, will “become the cornerstone for a mixed-used ‘neighborhood of interest‘” focusing on issues of retirement, aging, and health, where students and faculty would work with partners from private business and industry,” according to the Smoky Mountain News.

Shasta College, in Redding, Calif., is putting the final touches on a new health-sciences building.

The University of Florida plans to construct a building to be named for George Steinbrenner, owner of the New York Yankees and a major donor to the project. The building, to be used for band rehearsals, is to be finished by next summer.

Kenyon College, in Gambier, Ohio, is restoring a historic building that serves as the dining hall. The restoration will include the usual upgrades of heating and air-conditioning systems, along with an expansion to help with the operation of the college’s “Food for Thought” program, which promotes locally grown food.
