Now that Columbia University has essentially cleared its path to expand into West Harlem, The New York Times follows up with an article about what the university is considering building. The campus will be focused on science facilities; the story notes that Columbia’s ranking in attracting research dollars has slipped because it hasn’t had the space for updated facilities.
The article says the well-known architect Renzo Piano has been picked to sketch initial designs for many of the buildings that will occupy the land. “The new campus will not have a quadrangle or gates, but will be more integrated into the community, the university says, with coffee shops and stores along the sidewalks of 125th Street,” the Times reports. “It will be akin to New York University’s core campus, but with an overarching design.”
