Campus Planners Hand Out Awards for Buildings, Landscapes, Plans

July 9, 2007, 7:30 pm

Chicago — The Society for College and University Planning gave out its annual awards in planning, landscape architecture, and architecture on Monday. The awards this year honored a diverse set of projects across the country.

Hammel, Green & Abrahamson, an architecture firm in Minneapolis, was a big winner, getting awards for two projects. An addition to the Benedicta Arts Center at the College of Saint Benedict (The Chronicle, February 23) won an honor award for its “vigor” and the play between interior and exterior spaces. The firm won a merit award for an addition to a museum at the University of Alaska at Fairbanks.

A library at Santiago Canyon College won an honor award for a new building project. The library took advantage of the abundant natural light in Southern California with lots of windows. The building also incorporated some energy-saving elements, like roof overhangs and solar shades, to cut down on heat gain. The building was designed by LPA.

OPN Architects and Einhorn Yaffee Prescott won an award for a renovation of the Old Capitol Building at the University of Iowa. The renovation had followed a fire and extensive water damage. Over four years, the renovation restored the original grandeur of the building.

Other award winners include:

A campus plan at the University of Pennsylvania, by Sasaki Associates.

A campus residential plan at Case Western Reserve University, by Goody Clancy.

A plan for a lakeside restoration and nature preserve at the University of Wisconsin at Madison, by Ken Saiki Design.

A landscape design around postwar buildings at Keene State College, by Dirtworks.

The renovation of a cold-storage warehouse into a home for the College of Visual and Performing Arts at Syracuse University, by Gluckman Mayner Architects.

The renovation of a dining hall at the University of California at Santa Barbara, by Studios Architecture.
