Drexel University, Philadelphia, Pa.
Building Type: Residential
Construction Type: New
Cost: $42-million
Square Footage: 115,000
Architect: Erdy McHenry Architecture
Contractor: Intech Construction Inc.
Opened: 2009
This 17-story residence hall houses 482 students in a hybrid suite configuration with a series of shared living areas and spectacular views of downtown Philadelphia. Unlike most multistory buildings, in which each floor is arranged like the one below, in this tower each 5,000-square-foot floor shifts by 10 inches relative to the floor below, so that the floors rotate by 13 feet from the base to the top. A 3,000-square-foot vegetated roof is among the building’s sustainable features.

I just met with my student liaison from the student government association who provided interesting feedback about suite-style student residences. He told me that students find fewer opportunities for socializing with others from the floor when their living quarters are self-contained. His comment was that he thought this might have a negative impact on retention. It’s prompted me to do some research to see if there are any long-term studies related to this topic. Does anyone know of any (and thus save me some searching time)?
