Conceived as an iconic structure for the university’s Norton School of Family and Consumer Sciences, McClelland Park houses two academic departments and three auxiliary units that serve the local community. A “family plaza”—a civic living room with plenty of space and shade—is the centerpiece of the design, with room enough for informal gatherings and study groups and a play area for children using services or involved in research at the Norton School. Inside, classrooms and administrative areas adjoin faculty and research spaces. The building’s design creates a modern entry to the university’s science concourse while respecting the historic core of the campus.
