The Goddard Library, an award-wining structure designed in 1966 by John Johansen, required a renovation to meet new programmatic, technological, and space requirements—but without damaging the original character of this historically significant structure. The goal was to create a campus living room and academic center for the university. In addition to the renovating five floors of the original building, this project enclosed an under-used exterior plaza on the lowest level to create a 24-hour information commons, with a media center, a quiet-study space, and a café.
