Chapel of Our Lady of the Most Holy Trinity

Thomas Aquinas College, Santa Paula, Calif.

Building Type: Other

Construction Type: New

Cost: $23-million

Square Footage: 15,000

Architect: Duncan G. Stroik Architecture; Rasmussen & Associates

Contractor: HMH Construction

Opened: 2009

Intended to provide the college with a permanent place of worship but also to make a strong statement in favor of traditional Roman Catholic liturgical architecture, this chapel embraces classical and early California design, including the California missions built by Father Junipero Serra. The building has marble columns, classic arches, a dome with 12 round windows, and a three-tiered bell tower, and it relies on the traditional cruciform shape of early Christian basilicas.

Does your institution have a new building or a recently completed renovation? Make sure it gets included in our campus-architecture database and our forthcoming Architecture issue.
