Johnson County Community College has opened a $13-million art museum — designed by Kyu Sung Woo Architects, of Cambridge, Mass. — that The Kansas City Star says is “the perfect container for art.”
The new two-story building, the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, has 11,000 square feet of exhibition space as well as 5,400 square feet of academic space. An auditorium, a cafe, and storage areas fill out the building, which is connected to the college’s technology center by a 3,000-square-foot atrium. The architect of record is Gould Evans Associates.
The college, which serves more than 34,000 students each semester, is located on a 234-acre campus in Overland Park, Kan., near Kansas City. It was founded in 1972.
The museum’s cafe spills through a wall into the atrium that connects the new structure to an existing technology center.
