Those against abortion consider it to be nothing but legalized murder. Those in favor of abortion rights consider abortion to be a matter of the right for a woman to control her own body. They believe that legally forcing a woman to carry every pregnancy through to birth gives the state unwarranted control over a woman’s body.
Questions for anti-abortion rights advocates
1. Why, since you believe that human life begins at conception and abortion is murder, don’t you lobby for tax laws granting families deductions for individuals from the moment of conception (i.e., if conception occurs in the calendar year previous to birth, the parents get a tax deduction dating from the year of conception)?
2. Why, since you believe that human life begins at conception and abortion is therefore murder, don’t you insist on women who miscarry being investigated, and perhaps prosecuted for murder, manslaughter, or negligent homicide?
3. Why, since you believe that human life begins at conception, don’t you have funerals for miscarried fetuses?
4. Why ever grant exceptions for rape and/or incest? You wouldn’t advocate killing an actual infant just because that infant happened to have been conceived in a rape or by incest, would you?
Questions for abortion rights advocates
1.If human life with personhood doesn’t begin at conception, when does it begin? If it begins with birth, why not advocate abortion up until labor begins?
2. If human embryos are discardable things, why not support deliberately creating, then harvesting them, for stem cell research?
3. If abortion is to be entirely a woman’s decision, why not lessen the father’s liability to half the cost of the abortion and collateral expenses? Why make him liable for child support? Or, if you believe the father is liable for child support, why don’t you advocate letting him have some kind of say in the abortion decision?
4. Why consider any compromise at all? Either a woman has the right to control her own body, or she doesn’t.
