Lessons From the University of Vermont

Up here in Vermont, where the flood waters are still rising, I can’t help but notice something else rising too. Let’s call it class resentment. Let’s call it outrage. Let’s call it what it is: common sense.

I’m not saying the rich aren’t getting richer and the poor poorer here. They are. We are, alas, still part of the United States. But people are getting pretty cranky about it.

Take the latest corporate theft at the University of Vermont. UVM, like most places of higher education, has gone the way of paying some people (the president, the deans, the provost, and all those vice presidents) huge salaries while cutting or freezing pay and benefits for most everyone else. Today the UE Local 267, which represents service and maintenance employees at the university, is rallying to demand that they not be forced to give their health benefits and retirement back to a university that sees…
