No Sex for You

May 11, 2011, 10:43 am

That Northwestern University has decided to keep J. Michael Bailey after the public sex demonstration he held for his class was to be expected. He had tenure and, well, what else do you need to know? The announcement yesterday that he would not be allowed to teach human sexuality is mildly surprising. But well, I guess they had to placate parents somehow.

The news that, according to the psychology department chairman, the course would not be offered because no one else is qualified to teach the class, is  hilarious. Is this really true? What qualifies you to teach it? Do you need friends in the sex industry? I’m sure there’s a fun opportunity for an adjunct here!

Seriously, if the study of human sexuality is as fundamental to undergraduate education as most faculty and administrators believe it is, why is Northwestern denying students the opportunity to take the class just because of the actions of one badly behaved professor?
