Death and Taxes

April 15, 2008, 3:05 pm

On the bright side, he cuts right through the paperwork.

Death and taxes are supposed to be the guarantees in life, right?

But don’t you think that some people get out of paying so many taxes that they think they can cheat death, too?

If they could only find the right professional, they believe, who’ll make the high numbers in terms of age or income seem low, someone deft enough to take a certain amount right off the top, sufficiently savvy to assist them in slipping by the scorekeeper unnoticed, they think they’ll be able simply to go on and on without a tap on the shoulder from one of the men in black.

They convince themselves they’ll never face the real audit, the real “dead” in deadline. But just as you’re not any safer in first-class, you’re not any more immortal with even a terrifically good accountant.

Somehow the fairness of death is supremely gratifying. Even a lifetime guarantee only lasts a lifetime.
