Here’s a story in the Las Vegas Sun entitled “UNLV President Plans for ‘State of Fiscal Collapse.’” It’s the same story we’ve heard in many other states. Finances at the university are in the deep red, and the administrators are preparing for a “kind of bankruptcy” to handle them. Nobody is safe, not even full professors.
“Under the ‘financial exigency’ plan,” the Sun says, “tenured professors could be fired and whole departments and programs more easily closed down.”
As you know, the only way to remove tenured professors is by shutting down departments. There are hints in the story that plans are underway. Any guesses as to which departments will be the first to go?
