Shop Talk: New Buildings, a Recycled House, and a Postponed Project

The glass box, revisited: The newest building at Princeton University is a little more subtle than the Frank Gehry building that the university opened early last month. The new building, Sherrerd Hall, is a 45,000-square-foot box sheathed in fritted glass that creates Cubist patterns on the exterior. Constructed for the operations-research and financial-engineering department and the Center for Information Technology Policy, the building was designed by the Los Angeles firm Frederick Fisher and Partners to complement nearby structures, including the 1976 Mudd Manuscript Library, by Hugh Stubbins and Associates, and the 2001 Friend Center for Engineering Education, by Pei Cobb Freed & Partners. A three-story atrium is a prominent feature of the new building’s interior.
Casualty of the downturn: An $80-million student-union project has been put on hold at Miami University, in Ohio, because university officials are afraid the economic downtown will mean a cut in state financing and a drop in investment income, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. “We’re just concerned that in this environment it’s better to be safe than too aggressive,” said David Creamer, the university’s vice president for finance and business services. If the outlook improves, he said, the project could move ahead quickly.
Solar-powered housing: A house that students at the Rhode Island School of Design built for the 2005 Solar Decathlon has been reconstructed at the Portsmouth Abbey School, in Portsmouth, R.I. The energy-efficient home, originally 800 square feet, was enlarged to 1,600 square feet to serve as faculty housing for the school.

Research park addition: A $204-million building, Research 2, has opened at the University of Colorado at Denver’s Anschutz Medical Campus, in Aurora. The 500,000-square-foot, 11-story structure, designed by Fentress Architects and KlingStubbins, was planned for flexibility and houses both research and clinical labs.
