Expansion Plans at North Carolina Central U. Worry Some Neighbors

An expansion plan at North Carolina Central University calls for the purchase of about 140 homes and other properties around campus over the next 10 years, with the plan scheduled to built out by 2024. It has not been received well by some of the university’s neighbors, according to The News & Observer.

Carolyn Green Boone—the great-granddaughter of James E. Shepard, the university’s founder—told a crowd at a meeting that the expansion would harm historic neighborhoods and that critics had been ignored in the planning process. “We’re the founding family of this university and we feel totally disenfranchised,” she said.

The expansion plan includes new housing, a new stadium, a new library, parking ramps, and new facilities for some professional programs.

The News & Observer says that many residents in the area are elderly, living in houses that have been passed down from generation to generation. Some worry that historic structures will be destroyed, or that residents won’t get a good price for their homes.

  1. As a resident of Durham and a frequent guest lecturer at NCCU, I think that any new construction that might help clean up the area around NCCU would be a welcome change. It’s located in a crummy part of town that’s generally crime-ridden and not somewhere most folks want to be after dark. I’m sure some nice “historic homes” may be removed in the process, but I think that may be part of the price to pay. Just my 2 cents.

  2. As a graduate of NCCU, I agree with Bob. There is a need to clean up the area. Many of the homes “passed down from generation to generation” do not enhance the area but create a very negative appearance and unsafe feeling. That is my opinion as a person who had to park along the streets around the campus during my night classes.
