Shop Talk: Theaters at U. of Redlands, Gardens at Monmouth U., Groundbreaking at Michigan State
The University of Redlands is renovating and replacing its theater facilities, according to an article in The Press-Enterprise. Many of the current theater buildings are 40 years old, and the theater program at the university has outgrown the space. The project will cost $24-million in its first phase and will include new classrooms, the construction of new theaters, and the renovation of an old one. University officials hope that the improvement of the arts facilities will encourage stronger ties with the surrounding community. The project is expected to be finished in 2009. Monmouth University is building a “rain garden,” an area that will allow storm water to collect and filter down into the soil, instead of running off over paved surfaces. Storm-water management has been increasingly important to campuses, and rain gardens, filled with thirsty plants that clean the water, tend to be one of the more attractive ways of dealing with runoff. Michigan State University is breaking ground on a $90-million, 180,000-square-foot building for the College of Human Medicine. The seven-story structure will open in 2010.
