New East Asian Library at Berkeley Opens Today

A new library for East Asian collections opens today at the University of California at Berkeley. The $46.4-million building, by Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects, blends Asian-inspired details with the monumental Beaux Arts vocabulary of nearby buildings like the university’s Doe Library, designed by John Galen Howard and opened in 1910.
Known as the C.V. Starr East Asian Library, the 68,000-square-foot, granite-clad building houses more than 900,000 volumes, as well as maps, manuscripts, rubbings of inscriptions, and other items. The exterior features bronze screens designed by Mr. Williams and Ms. Tsien and cast in China.
The library was dedicated in October.
