At Princeton and Maybe Yale, 'Traditional Architecture Works Better Than Modernist Architecture'
A lengthy article in the Yale Daily News takes a look at recent building at Princeton University to get a sense of the kinds of buildings that might be constructed for two new residential colleges at Yale. Yale has a history of following Princeton, writes the Daily News architecture reporter, Paul Needham, who predicts that the buildings will be similar to Princeton’s Whitman College, designed by Demetri Porphyrios. Of course, there will be differences, Mr. Needham says: The buildings will be clad in brick instead of stone and look “distinctly Yale.” Princeton’s return to Collegiate Gothic for Whitman was driven in part by an architecture critic and Princeton alumnus, Catesby Leigh, who criticized Modernist architecture on campuses in a 1999 alumni-magazine article. “Everyone — aside from most architects — is just coming around to the fact that traditional architecture works better than Modernist architecture,” he told the Yale paper recently. Modern architecture looks great until the morning.

Are we to create disney land like campuses of artificiall historic buildings to create a sense of place? If so, not ony has modern architecture failed us but so has modern higher education. Reverting to historicist styles seems to suggest that new, progressive, innovative ideas have no place on a college campus. Instead, we must look back to models from the past for the inspiration for our most forward thinking institutions. Very sad…

Its obscene what Princeton spent on that residence hall if the numbers reported in the media are true. Princeton could have funded 100s of scholarships for financially needy students with the money spent on that building. After touring the building, I walked away thinking not only was it a huge waste of money but it is not even attractive or authentic looking collegiate gothic. This building just adds to the argument that we should consider revoking the tax exempt status of some of these super wealthy institutions since they abuse it by purchasing gaudy baubles for their campuses.

As a Yale student I can tell you that there is something wonderful about the classical gothic style of much of campus. The new “modern” buildings are really the result of hyped up intellectual garbage that produces buildings that simply do not look good. I would further add that Princeton built its college so that they could accept more students—a noble goal by all standards. However, to house those students in cheap boxes justified by pseudo-intellectual garbage is to do a disservice to the traditions of American Higher Education.
