13-Story Building by Maki Will Replace Cooper Union's Engineering School

Renderings of the building planned for the Astor Place site now occupied by the Cooper Union’s engineering school have turned up in The Villager, a New York newspaper serving downtown neighborhoods. Construction will begin after the art, architecture, and engineering college completes a new academic building by Thom Mayne’s firm, Morphosis, that is under construction at Third Avenue and Sixth Street.

The 13-story building that will replace the engineering school will occupy land that Cooper Union owns but has leased to Edward J. Minskoff Equities Inc. as a way of generating income. The 410,000-square-foot building, designed by Fumihiko Maki of Maki and Associates, will consist primarily of rentable office space, along with some retail areas and possibly some space for education uses, The Villager said.

The newspaper notes that Astor Place is becoming an architectural hot spot, with new buildings nearby by Gwathmey Siegel & Associates Architects and by Carlos Zapata Studio. Cooper Union’s main building was designed by Frederick A. Peterson and opened in 1859. Its interior received a striking renovation in 1974 by John Hejduk, then dean of Cooper Union’s architecture school.
