Yale Moves Ahead With Plan for Historic Expansion
Yale University came one step closer this week to solidifying its plans for expansion. In an official announcement to faculty members and students, the university’s president, Richard C. Levin, said he would recommend that the Board of Trustees approve plans to begin raising money and budgeting for two new residential colleges.
The move, which follows similar announcements by several peer institutions, would allow the university to complete its most significant expansion since the 1960s. Yale currently has 5,300 undergraduates and an endowment worth more than $22-billion. With the addition of the new living facilities, scheduled to be completed in 2013, the university would grow to 6,000 students. The plan, which still faces review in June by the Board of Trustees, would also increase the number of faculty members.
In his statement, Mr. Levin said an expansion would give Yale a greater opportunity to “prepare a larger number of the most talented and promising students of all backgrounds for leadership and service.” —Elizabeth F. Farrell
