Wanted: 'Cyber Center for Disease Control'

The manager of security programs for Internet2, the computing consortium of academe and industry, last week called for government intervention--in fact, a new government agency--to fight the spread of viruses and identity theft in cyberspace.

At the Anti-Phishing Working Group Counter e-Crime Summit, held last week in San Francisco, Internet2's Joe St Sauver pointed out that compromised computers can spread malware, child porn, and be used to search out passwords from general Internet traffic, says a report in Ars Technica.

That's been noted before, of course, but he argued that the enormous number of infections shows that users and service providers are not taking steps to combat them. Responsibility must fall to the government, Mr. St Sauver said.

A "Cyber Center for Disease Control," he said, would focus on massive emergencies as well as chronic PC-security issues. Such an agency could coordinate action and study security issues to prevent problems from breaking out. --Josh Fischman
