'Wait 'til Next Year'
It looks as if the week after winter break will be a bit less hectic than some campus computing officials may have feared: PC’s outfitted with Microsoft’s long-awaited new operating system, Vista, won’t go on sale until January.
Microsoft still expects to make the software available to site-license subscribers by November. But by delaying Vista’s wider release, the company will miss out on the lucrative holiday sales season—a setback that could hurt winter PC sales and possibly boost Mac purchases, analysts speculate. Whether the delay is to have any long-term impact on Microsoft’s bottom line remains to be seen.
